Start with the vacancy notice or offer. The initial selection is an example: permanent official, AD5, step 1, in Belgium, without allowances.

TA AD6Temporary agent → AD → Grade 6

FG IV is a function group, not Grade 4. “CAST Permanent” names an ongoing selection procedure for contract staff; it does not mean permanent official.

Staff Regulations: Article 67 and Annex VII, Articles 1–2.

Expatriation or foreign residence
How to choose 16%, 4% or 0%

16% expatriation: if you have never held the duty-country nationality, the usual rule requires that you neither habitually lived nor mainly worked there during the five years ending six months before entry. Work for another State or international organisation has special treatment.

If you hold or previously held that nationality, a separate rule examines habitual residence outside that country during the ten years immediately before entry, excluding residence abroad for State or international-organisation service.

4% foreign residence: for someone who has never held the duty-country nationality and does not qualify for expatriation. 0%: neither entitlement applies. Moving abroad alone does not establish eligibility; automatic nationality acquired through marriage has a specific exception.

The two allowances cannot be combined. HR checks nationality and residence/work history under Annex VII, Article 4.

Education support per child

Education is shown separately at the reference coefficient of 100%. The employer confirms eligibility, weighting and any payment to a school or transport provider.

Enter your eligible dependent children above to choose preschool, school costs, boarding or higher education for each child.

When does the 50 km rule apply?

The boundary is at least 50 km, including exactly 50 km. Distance alone does not establish entitlement.

Primary / secondary: Annex VII refers to the workplace being at least 50 km from a European School, or from a school teaching in your language which the child attends for evidenced imperative educational reasons. The school-cost ceiling can then double. This branch does not require the 16% allowance.

Higher education: the rule considers distance from a relevant establishment in your nationality country or teaching in your language; the child must actually attend an establishment at least 50 km from the workplace. The usual branch requires 16% expatriation. That requirement is waived when the child studies outside your country of employment, or if no relevant establishment exists in your nationality country; the remaining conditions still apply.

Higher-education support is a flat amount; school-cost support is normally reimbursement up to a ceiling. Preschool and ordinary boarding are not automatically doubled. Education normally ends when studies end, or at the end of the month of the 26th birthday, whichever comes first.

Study in a country with a higher coefficient, custody, scholarships, paid training and fees paid directly by an employer need individual assessment. Use PMO’s education guide and Annex VII, Article 3.

Reading your estimate

  • Uses the salary scale effective 1 July 2025 and the January 2026 coefficient corrections, verified on 21 October 2026. These are not a new 2026 salary scale.
  • Full-time monthly comparison in euros. Grade and step must come from the vacancy or offer; experience alone does not determine them.
  • Family allowances are illustrative scenarios using the selected eligibility basis. The employing institution confirms entitlements; unknown spouse-income or partnership conditions exclude household allowance from the baseline.
  • The duty-station adjustment illustrates the effect of the published remuneration coefficient before deductions. Article 64 applies the coefficient after compulsory deductions in payroll; the displayed gross estimate is not take-home pay.
  • Pension, health and accident insurance, unemployment contributions where applicable, EU income tax and the solidarity levy are not deducted. A net salary is not estimated.
  • Approved disability doubling and approved other dependants can be included. Education is shown separately as a reference at coefficient 100 or an HR-confirmed final monthly amount; it is never added to gross salary or the expatriation base. Installation, travel, daily subsistence, special duty and other individual allowances, part-time work and transitional pay are not included.
  • Gross comparisons are before coordination with equivalent benefits from other sources and before shared or redirected family payments. Those adjustments and their effect on expatriation are not modelled.
  • The Zagreb and Bucharest corrections are offered for those named duty stations. Ask the employer about any other duty station or a place outside the EU.
  • An EU institution, body or agency listing does not establish which pay scheme applies. Some CFSP agency roles, including SatCen staff, use their own regulations and salary scales. Check the employment conditions in the vacancy.

Different employment schemes

Seconded national expert (SNE)
SNEs normally remain paid by their national employer. Additional daily or monthly allowances depend on the receiving institution, secondment terms and eligibility, so the AD/AST/contract salary tables do not calculate their pay.
European Central Bank (ECB)
The ECB uses its own salary bands, conditions of employment and benefit rules. Use the salary band in the ECB vacancy and its official remuneration information.
European Investment Bank (EIB)
The EIB uses its own salary bands and remuneration framework. Its grade numbers must not be matched to the AD, AST or contract-agent tables.
European Investment Fund (EIF)
The EIF applies its own remuneration framework, aligned with the EIB with limited exceptions. Its salary grades and benefits are not the AD, AST or contract-agent scheme; use the EIF vacancy and remuneration guidance.
EU Satellite Centre (SatCen)
SatCen uses its own Staff Regulations and salary scales under a CFSP Council Decision. Its staff pay cannot be calculated from the AD, AST or contract-agent tables; consult the vacancy and its current pay scale.
