RECRUITMENT ROUTE

Direct applications, fixed-term roles and employment contracts

Apply directly to a named public employer when its vacancy uses a form, recruitment portal or stated contact.

These guides explain how to prepare an application. The original vacancy and its recruitment authority decide eligibility, required documents, selection stages and deadlines. Role suggestions use published job titles and simple matching rules; choose another guide when a title is ambiguous.

Your application, step by step

  1. Read the appointment terms

Identify the employer, job, location, working time and employment status. An indefinite contract, a fixed-term contract and a civil-service appointment are different arrangements; use the vacancy’s wording.

  2. Match every essential requirement

Build a short evidence table for qualifications, experience and professional status. Ask the named recruiter about a material ambiguity before the deadline. Describe any pending qualification or recognition accurately.

  3. Complete the employer’s application

Tailor the CV and supporting statement to the duties. Answer screening questions directly and attach only the required documents. Use the designated channel; sending a CV elsewhere may not count as an application.

  4. Track selection and verify the offer

Save the confirmation and prepare for the announced interview or assessment. Before accepting, check the written role, pay basis, hours, duration, start date and any conditions that remain outstanding.

Prepare for selection

  • Prepare examples that demonstrate the most important criteria in the order the employer lists them.
  • Research the service and explain why your experience is useful to its immediate work.
  • Prepare practical questions about duties, supervision, location and how success will be assessed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a contract role has no formal eligibility or document checks.
  • Treating saving a draft or registering a profile as proof that an application was submitted.
