These guides explain how to prepare an application. The original vacancy and its recruitment authority decide eligibility, required documents, selection stages and deadlines. Role suggestions use published job titles and simple matching rules; choose another guide when a title is ambiguous.

Your application, step by step

  1. Read the duties before choosing examples

Identify whether the work involves design, maintenance, permitting, environmental assessment, field science, laboratory work or project management. Match the advertised discipline and seniority rather than the broad job title alone.

  2. Check professional status where relevant

For a protected professional title or regulated activity, check the destination country’s competent authority and recognition route. A foreign degree, professional registration and permission to perform a particular activity are separate questions.

  3. Document decisions and results

Choose a project showing constraints, calculations or evidence, your decision and its result. Include safety, lifecycle cost, environmental effect or public consultation when relevant. Specify your role and avoid uploading protected designs.

  4. Submit the required technical record

Supply the requested qualifications, licences, experience certificates and project summaries. If a design exercise, site assessment or presentation is announced, note its scope and assessment criteria before preparing.

Prepare for selection

  • Practise explaining a technical recommendation and the evidence that could change it.
  • For planning or environmental posts, prepare an example of balancing legal constraints, technical evidence and community needs.
  • For maintenance or laboratory posts, explain how you kept records, investigated a fault and verified the work.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a project list as proof of your own design or decision-making responsibility.
  • Assuming professional recognition is identical across all engineering or scientific roles.
