Health services, care support and hospital operations

Choose the right application route for support, coordination and non-clinical jobs in health and care.

These guides explain how to prepare an application. The original vacancy and its recruitment authority decide eligibility, required documents, selection stages and deadlines. Role suggestions use published job titles and simple matching rules; choose another guide when a title is ambiguous.

Your application, step by step

  1. Separate the job from the employer’s sector

A hospital recruits receptionists, porters, care assistants, administrators and technical staff as well as clinicians. Read the actual duties and use the specialist medical, nursing or allied-health guide when the post requires that profession.

  2. Check the stated entry requirements

Record any care qualification, equipment training, practical experience or registration explicitly required by the notice. Confirm whether checks or training occur at application or after selection; do not assume every hospital job requires a clinical licence.

  3. Show reliable service to people

Choose examples of respecting confidentiality, communicating clearly, handling a difficult situation and maintaining an accurate handover. For operational roles, show how you followed procedures and reported a problem.

  4. Apply with the required form

Give accurate dates, duties and availability. Upload only the requested evidence and retain your receipt. Before accepting an offer, check the workplace, hours, shift pattern and any training commitments stated by the employer.

Prepare for selection

  • Practise explaining how you would seek help when a situation exceeds your role.
  • Prepare an example of supporting a distressed person while staying within your responsibilities.
  • If a practical task is announced, understand the instructions and explain your checks before acting.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the hospital’s name proves that the job is clinical.
  • Submitting a generic CV without showing the service and operational skills in the person specification.
