These guides explain how to prepare an application. The original vacancy and its recruitment authority decide eligibility, required documents, selection stages and deadlines. Role suggestions use published job titles and simple matching rules; choose another guide when a title is ambiguous.

Your application, step by step

  1. Confirm the professional category

Read the title and required register carefully: registered nurse, specialist nurse, midwife and care assistant are different roles. Match the requested field, level of responsibility and experience.

  2. Check the destination regulator

Find the nursing or midwifery authority and the recognition route for your qualification. Confirm any registration and language evidence required before starting. For example, Ireland’s NMBI separates qualification recognition from registration.

  3. Make the application evidence specific

Describe your clinical settings, dates, responsibilities and relevant development. Give examples of communicating with patients, recognising a concern, coordinating care and improving a service, without including identifiable patient information.

  4. Coordinate recruitment and registration

Complete the hospital or public employer’s application form and supply the documents it requests. Record whether regulator checks are completed or pending. Verify the advertised hours, workplace and any rotation before confirming availability.

Prepare for selection

  • Prepare examples of prioritising a busy shift, escalating a concern and communicating with someone who needed extra support.
  • Explain what you personally did, why and what changed, including what you learned.
  • Check the announced interview or assessment format and request any assessment adjustment through the named contact.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying with a different nursing specialism or register without checking equivalence.
  • Copying clinical examples that reveal patient identities or claiming registration before it has been granted.
